Dwarf Thistle

Dwarf Thistle has a rosette of spiny leaves at the base, but no stem. The solitary purple flowers are close to the ground, appearing during the summer and early autumn.

Found on short turf on lime, it is quite common in the southern half of England, rare in the north and absent from Scotland.
