Bittersweet is confused by many with Deadly Nightshade, even though very different. It has striking bright purple flowers and yellow anthers (pollen producing part), the plant clambering up to a couple of metres in height.

Flowers in summer and early autumn in both dry and damp places. Common throughout England and Wales, but less common in Scotland.
